Indonesian President Supports PM Hun Sen in ASEAN Chairmanship

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen had a telephone meeting with the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, on Tuesday morning, where President Joko emphasized that Indonesia will support the Cambodian Prime Minister in leading a successful ASEAN in 2022.

In response, Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his gratitude to the Indonesian President for his support, as well as for his participation as a representative of one of the major ASEAN countries during the Asia-Europe Meeting, which Cambodia also hosted at the end of November in 2021.

Speaking at an information briefing on Cambodia's priorities as chair of ASEAN 2022 on 29 December, The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prak Sokhonn, stated that Cambodia’s priority for the 2022 ASEAN Chairmanship is to promote peace, prosperity and development, promote regional contribution to world peace and accelerate and expand partnerships with external partners. He added that in 2022, Cambodia will also focus on easing the situation in Myanmar, as well as on the inclusion of Timor-Leste into the ASEAN union.

Cambodia began its rotating chairmanship of ASEAN on Saturday,1 January 2022, and Prime Minister Hun Sen, as ASEAN chair, will be beginning his two-day state visit to Myanmar on Friday, 7 January, to discuss possible solutions to the Myanmar crisis.
